Making good television is tricky business and networks have to make important decisions as to where to place television shows based on who the audience is and what will keep their interest. It is no exact science and sometimes highly entertaining material gets cancelled simply because of business. Here are some of the more unfortunate cancellations:
- Freaks and Geeks
- Aliens in America
- Dead Like Me
- Veronica Mars
When you ask about television shows cancelled ahead of time this will always be the first to pop up in internet conversation. The fans of this show have made a continued effort to support the show since Fox cancelled it in 2002 and a movie spin-off was made just for their benefit (Serenity).
Airing from 2009-2010, this sexy Urban Fantasy was fun. However, poor placement (late on ABC’s Comedy Wednesday) as well as poor promotion led to early cancellation in a television season full of other such cancellations.
After running for two seasons in 2003 and 2004, this Showtime series was cancelled. The quirky and playful approach to life and death was both artful and hilarious. Starting off on rocky ground already, the creator left the project early on claiming that an air of unprofessionalism pervaded the process. After its cancellation there came a movie in 2009, however the film went straight to DVD.
Veronica Mars ran from 2004 to 2007 after being transferred to the killer of dreams, The CW. As is common with cult TV shows, there is the promise of a film that help to solve some of the overarching mysteries of the Teen Detective series. All the same if the trends show anything, it is that the movie probably won’t do more than help to cement the death of the entire series.
This series was a clever and epic story that imagined America as a monarchy. In it, mysticism and absolute rule framed the world of power plays. However, having failed to find a sufficient audience, NBC eventually cancelled the show.
Reaper was fantastic, it was clever, well-written (by Kevin Smith), the devil was awesome – why did this show get cancelled?! It had the sort of staying power that Charmed and Angel had as a fun Urban Fantasy series. Unfortunately it never got to have a third season and the negotiations to pass it from The CW to another network failed.
Yet another brilliant series by Judd Apatow, this series also ended after one season. Apatow explained that is was difficult to portray college life in its reality on network television and thus most college shows never really got the chance to get off the ground. 16 episodes were shown on Fox to poor ratings and the show was eventually cancelled in 2002.
Futurama, though now back on air, was cancelled by FOX. Running from 1999 to 2003 on FOX before ceasing production and going over to Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim in rerun format, it was later revived in four straight-to-DVD films. Now Comedy Central has syndicated the show and new episodes for its seventh season are set to air in 2012, which is a good decision as it is currently the most critically acclaimed cartoon (literally). We love a happy ending!
Still, with such lists everyone will miss something different, be it Kyle XY, Pushing Daisies, Prison Break, Journeyman, Moonlight, Wonderfalls or Twin Peaks. What show do you wish never got cancelled so soon? Leave a comment!
