The Best Blogs On The Internet

As a writer for 6rounds’ blog, I think we have a pretty good blog here. We have articles that are not only funny (if I do flatter myself) but informative about social media and beyond. I can’t speak for my fellow bloggers, but when I’m writing an article, or trying to think of an article to write (which can be much harder) I draw inspiration from the best blog sites out there. I want my articles to be like theirs: smart, topical, and comical. If you’re not much of a blog reader, except for this one, of course, you might be surprised how entertaining some of them can be.
These are my personal favorites:
The Huffington Post

This one is a no-brainer, so I thought I would get it out of the way early. The Huffington Post is one of the most informative sites on the net, shoving out CNN’s site as the one place online that most people visit to get their daily news. Huffington is at its best when it tackles political issues, like the current administration, the war in Iraq, partisanship, the recession, and so on. It does its research and offers its opinion on whatever is happening right now. But they also write the occasionally comedy article, like The Funniest Sex Education Posters Of All Time. The comment section is also populated with surprisingly articulate, intelligent people, which is a nice change of pace for the internet. Now, The Huffington Post has been deemed a liberal site, as it usually sides with the left on most issues. It’s true that they can stand to be a little less bias in their articles, but if you hate Sarah Palin and the tea baggers, you’ll be right at home.
The Presurfer

While The Huffington Post aims to inform, The Presurfer has a different goal. Its motto is “Your Daily Dose of Diversion.” Indeed, The Presurfer seems to include every topic under the sun. Its topics cover animals to the weird, with everything between. Most of the articles aren’t about national or international news, they aren’t about political figures or celebrity scandals, but they do inform you about interesting developments in stories that aren’t likely to be covered on the evening news, like the word of the year in 2009 or the world oldest shoes. The blog also has a section dedicated to funniest things on the web, and another focused on cartoons. You probably aren’t going to find out what Obama has been up to if you visit the site, but you will be educated on things you didn’t even know you were interested in.
27bslash6

Is 27bslash6 a blog? I have no idea. It feels like a blog, but I don’t know if anyone calls the site that. I don’t know what anyone would call the site, except crude, mean, and unapologetically hilarious. The site is run by David Thorne, who is either the world’s bravest man or the world’s biggest jerk. It’s probable he’s a mix of both. He became famous for his “spider-man post” where he tried to pay his bank debt with a drawing of a spider. When they wouldn’t accept that, he asked for him to send it back. Most of his postings are actual email conversations he has had with people, slowly leading them into a world of insanity. Now, he picks on everyone, the guilty and the innocent, but I think he’s at his best when he’s dealing with jerks. My favorite exchange of his is when a guy named Simon asked him to help him create a logo for a new social media website he’s creating. Simon didn’t pay him for previous work he did, and David clearly hates the guy. The whole thing is gold, but this is the best part:

Actually, you were asking me to design a logotype which would have taken me a few hours and fifteen years experience. For free. With pie charts. Usually when people don’t ask me to design them a logo, pie charts or website, I, in return, do not ask them to paint my apartment, drive me to the airport, represent me in court or whatever it is they do for a living. Unfortunately though, as your business model consists entirely of “Facebook is cool, I am going to make a website just like that”, this non exchange of free services has no foundation as you offer nothing of which I wont ask for.Regards, David
If you visit the site, make sure to check out his emails with Shannon. You’ll cry laughing.
My Life Is Average

Is anyone else as sick of FML as I am? It’s not that the site is all about people whining about their day, it’s that what these people are whining about usually isn’t all that interesting or distressing. Your boss is a jerk? You had a bad time at work? That isn’t FML material, that’s the mundane minutia of daily life. Your lucky if your friends and family care about it, never mind strangers. Accidentally burning down your building or getting caught in a knife fight? Than yes, FML. My Life Is Average isn’t about trying to impress people by posting about your hard or extraordinary life, it’s about talking about those average things that happen on a day to day basis. Such as:
Today, I met a girl named Unique. She has an identical twin sister. No one else thought it was funny. MLIA.
People vote on whether your post was average (which is good) or meh (which is bad.) The site also features a daily average word. The last time I checked, the wonderfully average word of the day was “own.”
Lamebook
Lamebook is a necessary bookmark to have for fans of Facebook. Like My Life Is Average, the content of Lamebook is submitted by users and voted on. They take the lamest or funniest status updates, pictures or comments. Users get to “like” or “dislike” every submission, in the spirit of Facebook. The site is a great place to visit if you want to people completely fail at invoking interest in their life among their friends and family. Also, have a friend that’s constantly posting annoying things. Lamebook them!
These were my favorite blogs, the ones I can’t do without. I obviously missed some brilliant ones. What do you think the best blogs are?
