Alright, so you’ve found 6rounds, you’re registered, you’ve read through the FAQ, and are now checking out the blog. You’ve taken almost all the steps, now there’s only one left. Of course, it’s the most important one. You actually have to start your webcam adventure.

It may be a little nerve racking at first. You’ve probably instant messaged before, but that’s a kind of different. There’s space between you and the person you’re talking to. The person you are talking to can’t see you, so you have longer to respond, your attention can wander, and, if need be, you can fake your reaction. All these things are much more difficult, if not impossible, on 6rounds. It’s a face to face interaction, with everything you do being picked up by your webcam. So why do it? Well, for starters, it’s a more honest, personal conversation than text on a white screen can allow. And it’s fun!

You may want to use 6rounds exclusively to socialize with your friends and family. That’s a pretty great application for a webcam chat. It saves on your phone bill, doesn’t clog up your email, and it feels like the person is sitting in front of you instead of across the block, across the country, or across the world. But you should try to meet new friends too. So how do you go about this? Well, it starts with clicking on random round. You can specify what type of person you’re interested in talking too, or you can let fate (and your computer) decide who you get paired up with.

So, what do you do when you start having a conversation with a stranger? If you haven’t already, I highly recommend reading 6rounds’ suggestions on how to break the ice. When you’re doing something new, even if it’s something as simple as having a conversation, you will always be less nervous if you go in feeling prepared. You should do this by building an up to date profile on you and your interests. It’s much easier to slide into a discussion with someone if you share the same passion for a book, TV show, movie, or sport.

If you meet someone who happens to be shy, don’t panic. It can feel awkward staring at a computer screen with a stranger staring back at you, but try to pretend the computer screen isn’t there. How would you talk to someone you just met at a party? Pull out the typical questions: “What do you do?” “Where do you live?” “Any brothers or sisters?” I’ll admit, they aren’t the most innovative ice breakers, but they aren’t supposed to be. After a couple minutes of stuff like this, you will hopefully both feel comfortable enough to move onto something more interesting. And if all else fails, play a game! If you like to take risks, pull out truth or dare. For better or worse, you will get to know the person. If you’re not that confident, just try checkers.

So, you’re on 6rounds, why not give it a try? Sure, it’s great to talk to friends and family, but why not try meeting new friends from all around the world?

In normal human history we cherish the relics of the past. First edition books are worth thousands of dollars, famous art can be worth millions, and tools from years passed are placed in museums. When it comes to cyber history, we have less respect for what came before. Once technology becomes obsolete we discard it and forget about it. Who still has there very first computer? Or floppy disks? You don’t because our computers and storage systems have gotten much better. I bet you haven’t thought about floppy disks in years until I mentioned them. You probably haven’t thought about what life was like before webcams came along, either.

Webcams were first invented in 1991. They weren’t the sleek cameras that now sit on top, or are inside, of our computers. They were basically video cameras. Big, bulky, and cumbersome. The only difference between them and other video cameras is that webcams could link up to the internet. Interestingly, the first webcam broadcast was of a coffee pot in the University of Cambridge. People would check to see if there was any coffee left so they wouldn’t have to make a pointless trip. The image was in black and white and was blurry. It would be a long time, 10 years give or take, before webcams would become common household accessories.

So what did we do before webcams became so accessible and affordable? Well, the first breakout was obviously email. Those short messages between people made the world a much smaller place. No more phone calls with a hundred digits, no more outrageous international phone bills, no more stammered out messages on the answering machine (hey! Remember answering machines) now you could sent any amount of information where ever you wanted (as long as the other person had an email address) for free. It was revolutionary at the time, but the girdle was also revolutionary in its time. We still send emails, but it’s hardly the best way to stay in contact with someone.

Even with emails, there was still a void. People wanted to have conversation that happened in real time, not over a half an hour or however long it would take a person to respond. Enter chat rooms. Not only could you have a conversation, you could have a conversation with strangers. They were kind of like the first generation 6rounds, if you will. They ranged in topic from personal, to specific, to goofy, to down right weird or creepy. I was never a big fan of chat rooms myself. A bunch of disembodied people have 18 separate conversations got old pretty quickly. But they were quite popular in their time, and are still around today.

So you had slow interactions with our friends and quick interactions with strangers. What was next? Slow interactions with strangers? That would’ve been terrible. Instead we got quick interactions with our friends. Namely, instant messaging. Now, I’m not sure if ICQ was the first instant messenger, but it is the one I remember the most vividly from when I was younger. It seemed like every single one of my friends, possibly everyone in my entire school, had ICQ. All anyone ever talked about was what they talked about on ICQ. I wasn’t allowed to have it, which remains a tragic childhood memory. Basically, my computer sucked and it was very likely downloading the ICQ application would blow it up. Eventually my father opted for a better computer, and I could have my instant messaging. By that point MSN instant messaging had became popular, while ICQ started to become obsolete. Today I still use my MSN. It’s a good way to talk to people you haven’t seen in a while, or get to know people you’ve met over a dating site.

At long last we finally got the webcam in the early 2000’s. Sure, they were a little bulky, and the picture quality wasn’t the best, but we could finally videophone people. Our dreams of a videophone had finally come true, just in a way no one ever expected. As cyber technology evolves at an incredible rate, it’s interesting to think what huge advancement will come next and what we’ll leave in the dust of time.

Do you know what’s kind of sad about modern technology? How little we take advantage of it. I probably use 5% of the features on my cell phone. I make calls, I get calls. I haven’t taken any pictures with it, never surfed the web, and haven’t even opened the calculator application. That’s just a cheap little phone. God knows what I missing out on with my computer. I bet most of you right now have a webcam staring you in the face, and you’ve barely scratched the surface of what you can do with it.

Lets start with video recording. Now, you’re going to have to download some software to make this one work, but it can be worth it. Once you have your software downloaded, you can record anything your webcam can see. “What’s so great about that?” you may ask. Well, only that you now have an affordable, easy to use, no hassle video camera. Youtube was built off of recordings like these. Forget that, careers have been built off of recordings like this. Check out Julia Nunes. She started off posting music covers with nothing more than a ukulele and a webcam, and just over a year later she has a record deal and is performing across America. There are many stories of musicians like this. And it’s not just musicians who have made careers out of web recordings. Look at iJustine. She streams her life live and posts the most interesting parts on Youtube. May sound dull to you, but she has become an internet phenomenon. She’s not the only one. More memes than you can count have been born out of people singing, dancing, or doing some else that’s either weird, funny, or stupid into their webcams.

Maybe you don’t want to express yourself through song, or have the entire internet population in your room at any given time. Maybe you just want to express yourself, period. Have you ever thought about a video blog? It’s a completely different experience than a typed blog. You don’t have to worry about your grammar or spelling, you just talk like you always do. You’re able to make far more of a connection with your fans, and most people find it easier to get their point across through talking instead of writing.

Another feature is home security. There are times when we all would like to have a live feed into our homes. Maybe we want to keep an eye on our child’s babysitter. Maybe we want to make sure no one has broken in while we‘re on vacation. Or maybe we just want to see what our cats are up to while we’re at work. There are nanny cams and the like that you can buy to do the job, but like video cameras, they’re expensive. Also like video cameras, why not replace your nanny cam with your webcam. Setting it up is actually not that difficult.

Of course, the best feature of a webcam is the reason you bought it in the first place. Talking to people face to face. Whether it be friends, family, or strangers, nothing can be as great as that sort of live interaction you can receive from your little webcam.

Answer: I wouldn’t necessarily say no, although chances are you just need to take a shower friend. To put it simply – you don’t smell so good, you have body odor, you are not pleasant to be around, you stink! On the other hand and as you mentioned, you have a great body, so maybe no one will care.

6. Why Can’t They Just Look at Porn?

Answer: That’s actually a pretty good question and I’m going to answer this one seriously! Basically there are a few options here – for one, porn is fake while webcam girls are real; secondly, live webcaming is exciting and surprising and porn can be dull sometimes; thirdly, porn is only available for 18+, while webcams are open for everyone; lastly, guys are horny by nature :)

7. Most Sophisticated Hackers in the World!

Answer: This will have to be one really sophisticated hacker! He (or she, for that matter) will also have to be really good in sneaking in to people’s homes, a master in disguise and an amazing computer guy. While I know at least few people who poses all three qualities, I’m gathering they have better things to do with their time. So the answer is, well, no.

1. Frittenbude vs. We Are Enfant Terrible – Steven Seagul

This song is a remix of “Seagull” from the French band We are Enfant Terrible. A German band called Frittenbude made this video in 2009, just a few months after the original.

The music video was directed by Maxime Lethelier and was made with the web cams on their Macbooks. The artists recorded themselves in New York City, Munich and Frittenbude’s rehearsal room. If you like the song, you can download it for free at SoundCloud.

2. Sour – Hibi no Neiro

This famous video is of the Japanese band Sour and won the Japan Video Awards in 2009. It’s a collaboration of fans from all over the world who recorded themselves with their webcams and contributed the footage. The single “Hibi no Neiro” (translated “Tone of everyday”) appeared in their first EP “Water Flavor”. 3. Ariel Horovitz – A Simple Song

This music video of Ariel Horovitz from Tel Aviv, directed by Asaf Billet from Toronto, claims to be the “World’s 1′st Webcam Music Video”. However, I personally don’t think it was. Anyway, the making of gives interesting insight behind the scenes.

4. Young Jerz Mafia Music Freestyle

A home-made music video from the 21 year old American Rapper Young Jerz (Twitter: @youngjerz). Pretty cool for a zero-budget production, right?

5. HEALTH – Triceratops

This video is a live performance of the Los Angeles based band HEALTH recorded by the cameras of 13 Macbooks. It was directed by Saul Levitz, who is part of the VisionVersion collective. Click here to see some pictures from the shooting at the Materials & Applications building in LA.

6. ChartJackers – I’ve Got Nothing

This video was created as part of a charity project called ChartJackers initiated from the four vloggers Charlie McDonnell, James Hill, Jonathan Haggart and Alex Day. They composed a song with the help of the YouTube community with the aim of reaching first place in the UK Singles chart. The attempt failed, but the single came to 36th place. If you want to know more about the project watch the feature done by BBCSwitch (the commissioners of the project).The video isn’t produced with web cams only, but a lot of YouTube users contributed their own footage to the production using their webcams :)

7. C-Mon & Kypski – More Is Less

This crowd sourced stop motion music video directed by Roel Wouters and Jonathan Puckey is still in progress. Everybody can contribute a frame via web cam on the project website until all frames are replaced by images from users. The video will be updated every hour. The single “More Is Less” is a part of the album called “We are square” from the Dutch band C-Mon & Kypski. You can read a very interesting interview about the production of the movie and the technical background at Creativity-Online. Pretty amazing… So, take part!

So in order to try and help everybody out, we researched and examined a lot of different webcams in the last few weeks and we gathered a list of the best 9 web cameras you could get for your video conferencing needs. If video chatting is your thing (and it should be) – you should check this list out.

The cheapest one – Labtec Webcam 1200

This camera from ‘Labtec’ is probably the cheapest you’ll get new at amazon.com, which is suitable for the most common operating systems. It has really just very basic video features, but it does the job. You have to focus manually, but this shouldn’t be a problem for you. The resolution during a video session is only 352 x 288 pixels which is low. Also the frame rate of 5 frames per second is quite bad too. But what did you expect for ten dollars?!

The most expensive one – Axis 0304034 Q1755 60Hz with PoE Midspan

This battleship from Axis brings near enough everything. The network camera delivers footage with a proud resolution up to 1920 x 1080 pixels (HD). It’s equipped with a 10x optical zoom lens (auto-focus) and a built-in microphone. The camera comes with automatic day/night functionality and has several intelligent video capabilities such as motion detection, audio detection and a tampering alarm. In addition, it includes a Gatekeeper functionality which automatically zooms in when there is activity in the scene, and then zooms out after a preset time interval. This one is probably too good for the private use. It’s designed for casinos, airports and other security related issues. By the way there is a discount if you buy a bundle of ten :)

The value for money – HP KQ246AA 8.0MP Deluxe Webcam

This light-weight webcam especially designed for notebooks comes with an integrated wide angle microphone. The sensor delivers videos with a maximum resolution up to 1280×1024 pixels at 7,5 fps and 640 x 480 (VGA) at 30fps for smooth motion. For sure it has auto-focus and additionally three quick-launch buttons on the top. This well designed camera is versatile and able to fit the depth of several different screens (not only notebooks screens).

The best designed one – IPEVO Point 2 View USB Camera

The “Point 2 View” (P2V) looks like a desk lamp but it’s not. It doesn’t just have a pleasing design but also the mounting is well conceived. Due to the flexible and elegant long-neck weighted stand you can have unique perspectives and even close-up videos with a minimum distance of 2 inches. This macro mode is perfect for documents, art pieces, homework and many more. You can switch between continuous or single-click auto-focus. Snapshots can be taken easily with an extra button on the top. You are free to hold it like a pen or attach it like a normal web cam on your screen with the universal monitor clip which is also included. The resolution is amazing (1600 x 1200 pixels) and still smooth. Plug-and-play works for both PC and Mac. The package ships with an additional monitor clip which fits to any kind of flat screens. The included software controls the web cam fully and provides additional functions like full-screen presentations etc. Sometimes the continuous auto-focus in combination with a lot of movement in the background, acts strange but the single auto-focus works perfect. The 3D one – Minoru Webcam USB 3D

“Minoru” means “reality” in Japanese. It seems to be the first and only 3D webcam and it works quite simply. The device has two lenses and the software produces a red and cyan anaglyph image on the fly. The 3D effect is visible for anybody who is wearing ordinary 3D glasses otherwise you’ll see a blurred image. The package includes five paper 3D glasses for you and your friends, so this won’t be a problem. The Minoru has also ears which means, that a microphone is built in. It fits to any kind of screen because of it’s clever design. Also you are able to switch to 2D mode, if your opponent does not have glasses at hand. This is also a serious web cam in the 2D mode. By the way this web cam chat works well on web cam chat sites as well (but please wear the glasses reversed). Do not expect a 3D experience like you will have in a 3d-cinema, but still a very nice gadget!

The Bluetooth one – Ecamm BT-1

The one and only Bluetooth webcam is called BT-1 and works only on Mac OS X 10.5 or newer. The plain designed web cam can be placed up to 30 feet around your computer. This means you are quite independent from your computer. So you can move the webcam in the room. This might be very interesting if you want to show your chat partner your new flat etc. or if you have a conversation with your family. The range depends on the strength of you Bluetooth device. A Bluetooth range expander improves the range a lot. Unfortunately the maximum frame rate of 15 fps is not as smooth as other web cams. The resolution of 640×480 pixels is acceptable. The box which has a size of a shirt pocket includes also a stereo microphone which has an over-average quality. The built-in battery works for about 4 hours and can be charged with a normal USB cable. A deep hit is the price…

The best suited for laptop – Logitech Webcam Pro 9000

This smart webcam from Logitech has a Carl Zeiss lens which improves the image quality obviously and a video resolution up to 2-mega-pixels, which is the best on the market at the moment. Additionally you can take photos with a resolution of 8 MP. The universal monitor clip makes this camera suitable for notebooks and desktop monitor. The installation process is dead simple. The software includes a few improvements such as automatic lightning adjustment. Please download the latest drivers, because the software they deliver on CD is bad. All in all it’s impressive for the money!

The one even my father can operate – USB Retro Web Cam

This retro cam is dead simple. No buttons, no adjustments, no nothing. Looks like the vintage SLR your father had years ago. For Mac and PC no drivers needed. Simply plug and play. Unfortunately there is only a manual focus, but your father probably can handle this like he did before with his first camera.

The weirdest one – The USB webcam Rocket Launcher

This is not an ordinary web cam it’s an interactive toy. It’s a remote rocket launcher with an attached web cam for better aiming. For sure just harmless foam rockets being fired, so nobody gets hurt. You can move the tower remotely in all directions. This could be more of a nice gift than a gadget for yourself, because who buys a weapon which fires on yourself? Unfortunately you have to use the Windows MSN Live Messenger, otherwise the remote control abilities won’t work. Then it’s just a normal web cam with an average resolution. Think also of the possibilities to pan the web cam remotely.

You bought yourself a shining new webcam for your computer, or maybe you even purchased a brand new laptop with a built-in webcam. You’ve already plugged it in, installed the software and filmed yourself doing funny faces in front of the cam. FaceinHole – a very fun website that lets you easily create a totally new look for you and your friends. You just have to select a scenario, take a snapshot from your webcam and you’ll get a picture with you hugging Angelina Jolie, for example.

BlogTV – broadcast your own show and chat with viewers. You can also record and archive your shows and co-host live shows by splitting a show with a friend or an audience member. You can also watch other shows, interact with other viewers and give feedback on the shows broadcasted.

CamSpace – currently in private beta, this application is going to be really fun. You can basically play any game on your PC with your webcam, your body movement and this software – think about Wii, only with a webcam and piece of paper (or anything else you can think of).

Justin.TV – another destination site for broadcasting and watching live video online while chatting with friends. The company’s mission is to enable viewers and broadcasters to interact in real time through chat and live video. While it’s less interactive than Blog.TV, you should still try it.

12seconds.TV – a twitter-like video status service. You get only 12 seconds to share video moments from your life with your friends and family and also receive video updates from them, about what they are doing or where they are. You can record yourself using a webcam or a mobile phone. 12seconds.TV is currently in private alpha.

Seesmic – if you’re looking for more than just 12 seconds, but you still want to share video moments from your life and join a conversation with your friends, Seesmic could be just the right for you and you can also add video comments to various blogs (such as this one) with the service.

SpeedDate – the name really says it all. SpeedDate is a webcam enhanced, speed dating site, offering singles to go on multiple 3 minute dates from their home. Users don’t have lengthy profiles with information and pictures and when you’ve met someone you like, you can just click “Yes” or “No” to indicate whether you want to follow up with them.

WooMe – another speed dating site, where users meet new people in live speed sessions. Created and defined by the users, the sessions can include up-to 5 participants they’re based on webcams and they’re usually 1 minute long. When you find someone you like, you can exchange your contact details with them and continue the conversation elsewhere.

Stickam – a social networking site that focuses on live video streaming and broadcasting, where users can create shows and easily receive their 15 minutes of fame.
