The Coolest Websites On The Internet

The internet is a huge place, and it just keeps growing. There’s a reason sites fight for one of the top places on a search engine. It’s easy for a website, even a fantastic website, to get lost in the shuffle. Here are a few sites it would be a shame if you never visited.
Snopes

Hey, did you ever hear about how Disney puts subliminal messages in some of their movies? Or the story about the babysitter who cooked a baby while she was on LSD? It’s true! A friend of a friend told me. Snopes is the expert on all urban legends, from Disney’s weird history, horror stories (he had a hook for a hand!), food myths, and a ton of stories you might’ve never heard before. They thoroughly fact check every single rumor or legend and either verify it with actual sources or completely debunk it. For example, little Mickey didn’t die from mixing pop rocks with Coke, but Coke did used to be made from cocaine. It’s true! Snopes told me.
TV Tropes

Don’t let the name fool you, Tvtropes deals with all types of media. And media has it tough nowadays. It feels like we’ve seen it all before. There are a ton of movie genres where you don’t even need to see the film to know the basic structure of the plot. Romantic comedies for example: a girl who is unlucky in love, a handsome guy, fight, obstacle, find each other, blah blah blah. Or horror movies: gore, screaming, stabbing, one girl left alive. Tvtropes takes every cliché in television and lists them with clever names and multiple examples. You know that one girl who lives though the horror movie? She’s called the “Final Girl” and usually has a tragic back story, avoids vice, and is far more resourceful than the other characters who end up dead. Or the “Betty and Veronica” trope, which is a love triangle with a man caught between two very different woman. Beware though, Tvtropes is very addictive.
The-Editing-Room

The-editing-room is also known as Abridged Scripts, and since I like that name better, that’s what I’ll be calling it. Abridged Scripts is a hilarious satire of modern, popular movies. Basically, it’s what the summer blockbuster’s script would look like if it was 100 times shorter and 10 times more honest. They tackle truly awful movies and dish out some hilarious lines of dialogue. This is one of my favorites from the Twilight script:
KRISTEN STEWART
Yeah but I have a BOYFRIEND now, which means I no longer have to be independent or physically capable of doing anything on my own. GOD!
Abridge Scripts don’t only do parody of crappy movies, but also good ones, like Dark Knight. There’s no movie made that doesn’t have some plot holes or lame characterization to make fun of.
The Onion

If you haven’t figured it out yet, I’m a huge fan of satire. The Onion is very good at taking any story and twisting it on its head. It features majors headlines, like “Inner-City Stabbings Leaves Five Maidless”, videos, like Today Now, where two vapid hosts an early morning television show, man on the street interviews, horoscopes, magazine covers and political cartoons. Every article, video, or picture is hilarious, topical and twisted.
Dorkly

A relatively new site to the internet, Dorkly is made for those among of use who breathe and sleep video games. Even if you’re not into any of the current games, the site also features articles and videos about the games we all played growing up. Confessionals from Princess Peach, cartoons about College University, Facebook status updates from iconic characters, and some of the funniest/dorkiest videos you’ve ever seen. Though it’s only a few months old, I think it’s safe to say Dorkly.com will become a haven for geeks everywhere.
Those are my favorite sites. What are yours?
