Some people use Facebook groups to organize events or make political statements, but I’ve never really understood it. It seems pointless. Does anybody pay attention to these things? So you joined “Class of 2003! Is THE Best!!!!” and “Meat is MURDER.” Will your Facebook friends in the Class of 2004 feel cowed? Will the carnivores feel shamed?
No and no.
They will merely join their own Facebook groups, “Class of 2004 is DA BOMB!!!” and “I LOVE STEAK,” respectively. They will never engage in meaningful dialogue; they will merely compete for the highest number of members; and there will never be any clear winner, because no one looks at their Facebook groups again after joining anyway.
However, amid the many pointless Facebook gangs, there are a few groups and pages that truly do make a difference, with hundreds of thousands of members…

Some of these campaigns have been more effective than others. Last I checked, the man who wants to turn his house into a pirate ship has raised approximately $652, due in large part to the massive success of his Facebook group. And “If I get 1 Million Fans my sister will name her baby Megatron” currently has 1.5 million fans, but there’s still no word on whether his sister has held up her end of the bet.
