The Five Most Ridiculous Internet Memes

The Internet is a weird place filled with flashy lights, funny noises, random combinations, and a short attention span. Memes are defined by Merriam-Webster as: an idea, behavior, style, or usage that spreads from person to person within a culture. Internet memes are born, lived and then fizzle out because of over-saturation. There are some that are obviously destined to be memes like Keyboard Cat, Dramatic Chipmunk and Joseph Decreux Archaic rap. Then there are others that make about as much sense as a pro-wrestler showing off his My Little Pony collection on MTV Cribs.

Peanut Butter Jelly Time

Repetitive. Nonsensical. Pointless. These are the basic definitions of this meme. Annoying is something that can also apply. This earworm gets into your brain and doesn’t get out until something more grating comes along like, say, a power drill in your skull. The most confusing part is that the song is about Peanut Butter and Jelly. But it features a banana dancing. Uh… What is this I don’t even…

Watch at your own risk:

Geddan

Geddan (‘Engrish’ for ‘Get Down’) is a type of video that emerged due to what is called “cartridge tilting” or the improper insertion of a video game cartridge into a console. What would happen in some cases is that the video game characters would move chaotically. This movement was then reinterpreted in dance. Yeah, I don’t get the link either, but as you will come to see by the end of this post, logic should never be used as a means of understanding memetic phenomena. If you’ve never seen a Geddan video, here’s an example:

If you don’t understand why that’s ridiculous, then I don’t know how to help you. Of course it’s a little bit awesome, but it’s mostly just ridiculous. For a more thorough explanation of its origins you can watch this explanation by the Know-Your-Meme team.

Crying While Eating

Crying While Eating

This meme is so weird. Read the heading. That’s the meme. People just put up videos of themselves crying while they eat. Lots of people. Why, Internet? Why? Crying While Eating Website

Boxxy

Boxxy is a strange hyper girl who put up videos. Rocketboom’s Know-Your-Meme department explains the origins and results of this meme. Apparently it sparked a ‘civil war’ on 4chan’s message board. Yeah. I don’t get it either but watch and see the ‘explanation’ of the controversy. It all had to do with some people thinking she’s fantastic and others thinking she needs pills. Guess which side I’m on?

And then there was a remix of her hit video into a song, as you do with memes. Really, Internet? Really?

Magibon

This is the most ridiculous because I seriously don’t get it and it makes me a little bit angry. She’s got big eyes. She stares at the camera. She murmurs some Japanese. And she gets millions of views. I suppose your enjoyment of her uploads depend on how much you value ‘content’ and ‘things actually happening’ in a video that you watch because those things are definitely subjective and – it doesn’t make any sense!

THAT GOT MORE THAN FIVE AND A HALF MILLION VIEWS!!! How is that possible? How is that even… remotely… aghhh! If you don’t get it as yet, here’s another sample of brilliant content. She speaks in that one so we’re making progress. Give it 20 years and she’ll probably be able to comment on the political situation in Kenya. Ah Internet. You make me weep in bewilderment sometimes…
