Back in college, my high school boyfriend and I were in a long distance relationship for one year, five months and three days.
It sucked. A lot.
We ran up huge phone bills, sent each other weepy (and come to think of it, incredibly embarrassing) emails proclaiming our love — and our misery at being apart.
He was in California and I was in New York, and I’d stay up until 1am some nights waiting for him to get home from work. When he finally called me, I was exhausted and frequently a little grumpy. We’d get into fights for no reason at all. If I was late for our phone “date,” he’d get pissed. If he didn’t ask me what I ate for breakfast, I’d get pissed. Sometimes we’d skip hanging out with our friends so we could talk to each other. The resentment this produced, coupled with the lameness we felt watching all our college friends making out at parties while we pined away for someone we only saw every three months, eventually took its toll and we broke up.
Senior year, I started dating a guy who lived 10 minutes down the hall from me and I was blissfully happy…until graduation, when suddenly I found myself in another long distance relationship. But by then times had changed: we’d entered the Era of Video Chat. And not too much later, the Age of Facebook Video Chat.
It’s an exciting week here! We’ve changed our name to Rounds and are now proud to announce the launch of our newest extension to the Rounds platform, Video Chat Rounds Facebook Application.
Video Chat Rounds allows facebook friends to interact and have fun while webcam chatting. You already chat to your friends on Facebook right? Well now, using Video Chat Rounds, you can video chat, take snapshots, play games, listen to music, share photos, use effects, send gifts and much more without ever having to leave facebook. When I studied abroad in college, there was one girl who I’ll just refer to as Sad Sack Susie. We were in a gorgeous South American capital city, but Susie wasn’t seeing any of it. She missed her friends, she missed her mom, she missed being able to understand what was going on around her. And she missed her boyfriend. She was completely paralyzed by all the newness around her. The first few months, Susie would mope whenever we went on some excursion and she was always running off to check her email. By the end of the semester, she had broken up with the boyfriend and found herself a local fling, but she’d spent approximately USD$500 on tearful phone calls in the process. And she’d wasted most of her study abroad experience feeling homesick.
Robert Scoble, from the famous Scobleizer blog interviewed the founders of 6rounds (read more about them on the team page) on his last visit to Israel and uploaded the results to YouTube. Here is how he described us: 6rounds brings webcam chats together with games. It’s sort of like what would happen if Zynga and Chatroulette met and had a baby. Here the founders give me a demo and show me this interesting service.
So the Apple’s tablet is probably going to be awesome. It’s going to be a game changer and a life saver, a gaming machine and an office computer, it’s going to be light and beautiful, cool and trendy. It’s going to be love, transformed into a computer. Or maybe it won’t, who really knows?
